This fabulous crystal is Plumbogummite pseudomorph of Pyromorphite from Yangshuo Mine in Guangxi Zhuang, China. A pseudomorph is a mineral that has replaced another mineral while retaining the original mineral’s external shape. Plumbogummite replaces pyromorphite, where aluminum and hydroxyl ions replace chlorine in pyromorphite, forming plumbogummite but keeps the original crystal shape. This replacement occurs gradually as lead phosphate (pyromorphite, Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl) reacts with water, aluminum, and hydroxyl ions to form plumbogummite (PbAl₃(PO₄)₂(OH)₆). When pyromorphite is exposed to acidic or hydrothermal fluids, it starts to dissolve. These fluids introduce aluminum (Al³⁺) and hydroxyl (OH⁻) ions, which replace the chlorine (Cl⁻) in pyromorphite. The result is a gradual transition from green/yellow pyromorphite to blue plumbogummite. Often, specimens show an intermediate phase where the core is still pyromorphite, but the outer layer has transformed into plumbogummite. What exactly is an aluminum bearing solution? An aluminum-bearing fluid is a hydrothermal or weathering-related solution that contains dissolved aluminum ions (Al³⁺), which can participate in mineral alteration and replacement processes. These are hot, mineral-rich waters circulating through rocks, can dissolve aluminum from minerals like feldspars, kaolinite, or laterites. They can be found in tropical soils where intense chemical weathering breaks down silicate minerals, releasing aluminum into solution. These fluids commonly lead to bauxite (aluminum ore) formation and can contribute to the alteration of lead phosphates like pyromorphite into plumbogummite.
