Lead Hill, situated north of Illinois Route 146 near Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, spans 3,000 feet in a north-south direction. Early mining operations primarily focused on extracting lead, with little attention given to fluorite due to its lack of market demand. However, significant commercial production began around 1917 under the ownership of the Basic Minerals Company, with subsequent operations by entities such as the Pittsburgh Fluorspar Products Company and its successors. Notable mines in the area include the E.W. Frazer Mine, Robinson Lead and Fluorspar Mine, and pits grouped under the Fluorspar Products Mines–Lead Hill Group and Grischy Lead Hill Mine.
